🌴 Green Coconut (Pipa type) (*Cocos nucifera*)

🔤 Name English / nombre español / Name Deutsch

Green Coconut (Pipa type) / Pipa verde / Grüne Kokosnuss (Pipa-Typ), Trinkkokosnuss

📄 General description

This Pipa palm is a dwarf variety of Cocos nucifera bred for reduced height, early fruit production, and easy harvesting. It produces juicy, young coconuts with sweet, refreshing coconut water, known in Costa Rica as “pipa.” Unlike standard tall coconut palms, this form typically reaches only 3–6 m in height and remains significantly shorter even when mature. This makes it especially suitable for small properties, home gardens, and locations where harvesting without climbing equipment is desired.

🌿 Botanical Characteristics:

Family

Araceae / (Arum family)

Growth and Structure

The dwarf Pipa palm has a slender, slightly curved trunk about 20–30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are pinnate, up to 3–4 m long, and form a loose crown that remains low to the ground. In contrast to tall varieties, height growth slows after a few years, so the palm rarely exceeds 6 m. Fruit production often begins as early as 3–4 years after planting.

Leaves

The long, feather-shaped leaves are bright green, slightly drooping, and provide both shade and wind protection.

Flowers

Inflorescences appear between the leaves, bearing both male and female flowers at the same time.

Pollination

Primarily wind-pollinated, sometimes assisted by insects.

Sexual System

Monoecious

Sexual System Notes

Male and female flowers develop on the same individual, allowing for self-pollination.

🌤️ Soil and Climate Preferences

Prefers well-drained sandy to loamy soils with high organic content. Thrives in full sun in tropical climates with year-round high humidity and regular rainfall. Salt-tolerant and suitable for coastal locations.

🌴 Fruit and Use:

General Use

Fruits are harvested young, when the aromatic, clear coconut water has its highest sugar and mineral content. The soft “coconut jelly” flesh is also eaten fresh. The reduced tree height makes harvesting simple and safe.

Ripening Season in Costa Rica

Fruiting and harvest are possible year-round, with slight peaks during the rainy months.

Common Fruit Traits

Young fruits are green, round to slightly elongated, and contain 300–500 ml of coconut water. The husk is thinner than in mature coconuts, and the flesh is soft and gelatinous.

Climacteric Category

Non-climacteric

👉🏿 Climacteric category overview

Climacteric Category Notes

Fruits do not ripen after harvest and should be consumed fresh within a few days to enjoy their full flavor.

🌱 Propagation and Grafting

Propagation is almost exclusively from seed. Dwarf varieties generally retain their growth traits when grown from the kernels of the mother plant.

✂️ Care & Challenges:

Pruning

Regular removal of old leaves and fruit stalks improves crown health and eases harvesting.

Diseases and Pests

May be susceptible to red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), coconut fungal rots, and leaf spot diseases. Good sanitation and regular inspection are important.

Soil and Fertilization

🧺 Harvest Notes

Harvesting pipas is especially easy with this variety: thanks to the low height, fruits can often be picked directly by hand or with a short harvesting pole. This reduces the risk of accidents and makes the harvest accessible even for small-scale growers or home gardens.
