ABOUT US

We (two environmental activists who have been active in Germany for some time) are currently setting up two projects (this one and Huelal Totga) on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. We are looking for people who want to help us.
We were lucky to buy an 8000 sqm piece of land near Puerto Viejo de Limón, about 3 km inland, along with three houses that need require renovation. It’s between the Manzanillo-Gandoca nature reserve and the Keköldi indigenous reserve, making it an important link in the local ecosystem. Our project, called Yuyo (Spanish for weed), aims to make this land more self-sufficient. We also created a foundation in a nearby forest where anyone can join as long as they follow certain rules, like no drugs, guns, hunting, cutting trees, using fossil fuels, or plastic.

How our volunteers experienced their stay on our farm

Hello all, My name is August Spurling! My friend and I were fortunate enough to volunteer at the Yuyo project from June-July 2024. All around, the experience was amazing! The project is located on a beautiful hill just 20 minutes south of Puerto Viejo and is filled with animals. The property instantly felt at home. At project Yuyo we developed experience in farming, Spanish, ecology, and much more. Although some of the work was difficult and conditions weren’t always easy, we left gaining so much experience not only with the environment, but with ourselves. As for the hosts, they were incredibly caring, wise, and humorous. Their passion for the environment and the well-being of others certainly did not go unnoticed and I am excited to see what they achieve. If you love animals, the beach, self-improvement, and good vibes this is the place for you. The only thing I would recommend is renting/purchasing a bike because of hills extremity, but don’t miss out on this opportunity.
